The Reilly Thanksgiving Invitational Story

Do you like football? Of course, I’m Italian, you know we are really close to this sport … but it depends. We are talking about American Football, not soccer. 

As each sport, football carries stories about humanity, dignity and courage. The biggest reason for its popularity, I suppose, is its main instrument: also poor children can have a ball and they can play on the streets, during the day their parents spend on work. If they work. Football is powerful because is easy to play and everyone can play it. Even if you don’t have the athletic skills of a Ronaldo or a Maradona, the story is very funny and it promotes team building.

Why did I choose to review a book about football? Well, it’s not my passion even if I’m a good player (little and tough, yeah!) and I hate football system which give billion of dollars to men without an education, who just spend money on luxury and parties. However, I think that not each sport can make community unite as football during European or Mondial League and this capacity comes from the poverty of football’s origins.

In particular, The Reilly Thanksgiving Invitational Story is the story of 22 kids (now men) who have played football for 50 years on the same day: the morning of Thanksgiving Day. Two of them Brent Parrott and Brian Renfro, tell this story in each detail: their attention to details goes to be boring often, but if you overcome this aspect, you will find a beautiful story about passion, American modern history and courage. 

In fact, a portion of the money collected by selling this book will go to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, so for a noble motive against this dramatic disease which has touched most of the 22 players we have met reading and which many people around the world have to deal with.

Another reason to read this book? Well, as e-book the author have created many links to a glossary, to the site, to the Fisher Center and to other interesting documents.

Vi piace il football? A me certo, sono italiana, lo sapete che siamo parecchio affezionati a questo sport… ma dipende. Stiamo parlando del football americano, non del calcio.

Come ogni sporti, il football americano racconta storie di umanità, dignità e coraggio. La ragione principale della sua popolarità, immagino, sia nel suo principale strumento: anche i bambini povero possono permettersi una palla e possono giocare per strada, durante il giorno, mentre i genitori lavorano. Se lavorano. Il football e così potente perché è facile da giocare e tutti lo possono fare. In particolare, The Reilly Thanksgiving Invitational Story è la storia di 22 bambini (ora uomini) che hanno giocato a football per 50 anni nello stesso giorno: la mattina del Ringraziamento. Due di loro, Brent Parrott e Brian Renfro, raccontano questa storia in ogni dettaglio: questa attenzione spesso diventa noiosa, ma appena si supera questo aspetto si scopre una meravigliosa storia sulla passione, sulla storia dell’America moderna e sul coraggio.

Infatti, una parte del ricavato dalla vendita del libro andrà al Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, per un nobile scopo contro la drammatica malattia che ha colpito la maggior parte dei 22 giocatori che abbiamo conosciuto fra le pagine e con cui molte persone al mondo hanno a che fare.
